ABOUT JOSE AKA JOE AKA GONZ
From: San Diego, California
Years of climbing: A year and a half
What got you started?: I went bouldering for the first time while visiting a climber friend living in Oregon. I can't imagine ever NOT being a climber now.
Favorite climbing spot: Waimea Bay because of the variety of problems and the rad crew that rolls out
Places climbed: Mostly around Oahu but also in a couple gyms in Portland and San Diego
Favorite style: Bouldering
Climbing hero/inspiration: The friends that I've made climbing here in Hawai'i inspire me the most. They're all super positive and motivate me to climb harder.
Other jobs: I've been an art student and custom wood worker at Retrospect Designs for the last two years. I also dabble in college radio (KTUH!!!)
ABOUT JOSHUA AKA JOSH
From: Phoenix Arizona
Years of climbing: How long have you been climbing for? Three and a half years
What got you started?: A friend inviting me to the gym. Yes, she was a girl.
Favorite climbing spot: The homestead! In Globe Arizona.
Places climbed: Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada, Hawaii, and Washington.
Favorite style: Sport climbing!
Climbing hero/inspiration: Daniel Woods and Hans Florine.
Other jobs: Professional photographer with Dolphins and You.
From: Born in Virginia but lived ALL OVER!!!
Years of climbing: Over 11 years
What got you started?: I worked as a High Ropes Course and Rappelling facilitator for a summer camp and year-round recreation facility for a few years and that got me interested.
Favorite climbing spot: Tough one! My favorite place for all around climbing experience is probably Ten Sleep Canyon, Wyoming, but my favorite rock is the sandstone around Chattanooga, and the northern Georgia/Alabama corner.
Places climbed: I've climbed all over South Korea with trips to Thailand and Vietnam. In North America I've literally climbed from New York to Washington state and Georgia to Canada. The majority of my climbing in the US has been in Colorado, Wyoming and the Southeast (TN, GA, AL, KY).
Favorite style: My favorite type of climbing is sandstone bouldering.
Climbing hero/inspiration: Well, I honestly get more inspired by nature than by other climbers, but if I had to pick a favorite inspiration it would be Lynn Hill.
Other jobs: I teach ESL to international students at the University of Hawai'i. I've been an ESL teacher off and (mostly) on since 2006. Before moving to Hawai'i I was a manager for REI and have also had several other sales jobs.
(you can also find her on our setters' page)
Years of climbing: Climbing since 2007, little over 10
What got you started: I always wanted to, I knew I'd love it (I loved climbing trees and houses). I always thought I'd move to Colorado to get into climbing but found Climb Aloha and booked it as a birthday gift for a friend. It was love at first climb and out of the 4 of us in the group I'm the only one who is still climbing.
Favorite climbing spot: This is a tough one.... Bishop... Albarracin... I don't know... anywhere remote but near rich culture and good food!
Places climbed: Hawaii, all over the west coast, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, West Virgina, Japan, Spain, France.
Favorite style: I started of sport climbing then really got into bouldering. I enjoy both. I like balancey, technical, powerful... I guess I just like climbing no matter how hard or easy I like to try it all!
Climbing hero/inspiration: "Angie Puccio". She's never deterred, never frustrated, always positive and so strong (keep in mind she's only 4'9''). Also our very own local sponsored athlete, Wai Yi Ng for raising the female bouldering standard in Hawaii and Lynn Hill and Lisa Rands who raised the bar for females nationally.
Other jobs: Full time doggie day care to two dogs and part time to two cats (yes they also are at my doggie day care, I don't discriminate).
I also recently retired from Paul Brown Salon as a hairstylist. It was a great 15 years behind the chair.
From: Originally from my mother's womb. Born in California, raised in San Francisco. Lived in LA, Michigan, Philadelphia, New York City, but Hawaii is where my home and heart is
Years of climbing: 4 year
What got you started: A coworker suggested I check out VRG and get a haircut and the rest is history.
Favorite climbing spot: I started climbing at the Kaka'ako Volcanic Rock Gym and met so many good life long friends there, so I will always remember it as my favorite indoor gym.
Places climbed: Although I'm not a strong climber, I've been blessed to visit some great locations such as Red Rocks, Yosemite, Bishop, Fontainbleau, Albarracin, and a variety of sick indoor gyms.
Favorite climbing style: Jugs on jugs!
Climbing hero/inspiration: I'm inspired mostly by new climbers - people who are just learning how capable they are and surprising themselves at their ability.
Other jobs: By day, I'm a veterinary surgeon, and have been in practice for almost 8 years. By night, I'm "Narco" a super-hero who randomly falls asleep anywhere, and everywhere. In my spare time I also run a carbon fiber manufacturing business (Ikaika Outriggers), and help out at The Arch Project Climbing Center. I also consider it a full time job herding around our furry kids around
CHIEF EXECUTIVE WOOFFICER
From: Originally from a small farm in Michigan, Cali grew up climbing trees and chasing squirrels. She quickly graduated to scrambling granite on the east coast, and became a specialist at the Rat Boulder's in NYC's famous central park. Nowadays, she can be found chilling at her favorite crags around the island with her other four-legged pals watching their silly human friends trying to climb rocks for fun. She's the gym's official mascot and regulator - don't get WOOF'd!
GYM ARCH ANGEL
From: Lily was officially TAPCC's first guest. Hailing from the streets of Waipahu, she came running into our warehouse the day we moved in. Despite our best efforts to find her owners through the Humane Society, Craigslist and social media, she was unclaimed and in need of a family. She's created one for herself with us using her playful charm and she can be found daily at the gym fetching water bottles, brushes, shoes, and bringing them to her favorite spot in the parking lot.
